If she plays every week, get her something that goes on the table. The Yellow Mountain mat is what I'd buy first: a mat makes the game much quieter, it rolls up into its own bag, and at about $31 it's an easy yes. If she's just starting, the bigger gift is a whole set, and the Huntington set (about $170) comes with everything, racks included.

For smaller budgets, the Sandberg guide is the beginner's book with the most reader ratings, and a pack of Rosanne Beck napkins is the hostess gift that costs less than a coffee.

Yellow Mountain Imports Table Cover

Yellow Mountain Imports Table Cover

A quiet, roll-up mat that fits a card table and costs about $31.

Buy it if
She plays at a card table or a dining table and her tiles slide and clatter.
Skip it if
She already owns a mat she likes, or she wants a smooth neoprene surface (the mats I'd pick by table size).

Players rarely buy a mat for themselves. This one is a square of thick synthetic felt on a rubber backing, 31.1 inches on each side, so the racks sit at the edge and the wall has room in the middle, and the rubber keeps it in place. It comes in blue, red and green, and rolls up into a carry bag.

What owners report
The size surprises buyers in a good way (a few say it nearly covers their card table), and the quiet comes up too. The texture divides: two found it closer to a thin carpet than a smooth mat, and one of them switched to a neoprene one.
Flaws but not dealbreakers
  • It's felt, not neoprene, with a soft, fabric feel.
  • Don't fold it. Roll it, or it creases.
  • Spot clean only: a soft brush or a damp cloth, no washing machine.
Measure the table
31.1 inches square. Buyers with a card table say it covers nearly the whole top.

Yellow Mountain Imports Huntington American Mahjong Set

Everything she needs to host a game, racks and pushers included.

Buy it if
She's learning and doesn't own a set yet, or she wants to host her own game.
Skip it if
She already plays with a set she chose herself.

First, it's a full American set, with the jokers a Chinese set doesn't have. The Huntington has 166 white melamine tiles with green striped backs, four wooden racks with built-in pushers, a wind indicator, scoring coins, dice, an illustrated instruction booklet and a carrying case.

The 166 tiles include spares: for League play she'll use 152 (why sets come with extra tiles). Want to compare it with other sets? Here are the best American mahjong sets. There are no score sheets in the box.

What owners report
On Yellow Mountain's own site, the two lowest reviews are about customer service (a slow exchange, a lost package), not the set, and buyers who mention the tiles call them good-looking and well made.
Flaws but not dealbreakers
  • No score sheets. Add a pad if you want the box to be complete.
  • The tiles are a standard size, a little over an inch tall. Players who want oversized tiles look elsewhere.
  • The price moves between about $170 and $176.

Yellow Mountain Imports Wooden Racks with Pushers
A player with a starter set

Yellow Mountain Imports Wooden Racks with Pushers

Solid wood racks with rubber corners and magnetic pushers.

Buy it if
She learned on a starter set with light plastic racks and you want to upgrade her table.
Skip it if
Her set already has wooden racks, or she prefers the clear acrylic look.

These are solid wood racks, 18 inches long, with rubber under the corners so they stay put on a mat, and the pushers attach with hidden magnets: on top for storage, on the back when you push the wall to the middle. The four weigh about two pounds together.

What owners report
The complaint that comes back most in the lower reviews is the magnets: several buyers found them too weak to hold the pushers firmly. The chestnut color can also look lighter than the photo, and a few pushers warped.
Flaws but not dealbreakers
  • The magnets are the weak spot: don't expect the pushers to snap on hard.
  • The color can look lighter in person.

A Beginner's Guide to American Mah Jongg

A Beginner's Guide to American Mah Jongg

The classic how-to book, written to the League's rules, with quizzes.

Buy it if
She just signed up for lessons, or she wants to learn before her first game.
Skip it if
She already plays well. This is a beginner's book.
Read the full write-up

Elaine Sandberg's guide is the beginner's book on the American game with the most reader ratings, and it follows the National Mah Jongg League's rules. It walks through the game step by step, with color photos of the tiles, practice exercises and a quiz at the end of each chapter, including the two things beginners struggle with most: choosing a hand and what to give away in the Charleston.

Buy the paperback, not the Kindle edition. There's also a large print edition, released in June 2026.

What owners report
Readers single out the exercises and quizzes, and say it helps most before or between first lessons. Several add that it really clicks after a few games, and one found the card illustrations too small on a Kindle.
Flaws but not dealbreakers
  • Scoring is the part some readers wish were clearer.
  • It works best next to real games. For a free start, there's how to play a whole hand.

Mah Jongg: The Art of the Game
A player who loves old sets

Mah Jongg: The Art of the Game

A hardcover of more than 200 photographs of collectible sets.

Buy it if
She has a vintage set, or she loves the look of the tiles as much as the game.
Skip it if
You want something that teaches the game. This book is about the sets, not the rules.

A hardcover coffee table book of more than 200 color photographs: collectible sets from around the world, in materials from paper to ivory and mother of pearl, with chapters on the history of the game.

What owners report
Readers praise the photography, and many bought it as a present. The criticism is about the text, which a few found thin next to the pictures.

Swig Life Mahjong Travel Mug, 22 oz
Game night drinks

Swig Life Mahjong Travel Mug, 22 oz

An insulated mug printed with mahjong tiles, with a handle.

Buy it if
She brings a drink to every game, or drives to her weekly table.
Skip it if
She only drinks from a glass at home.

An insulated stainless steel mug printed with colorful mahjong tiles, with a plastic handle and a slider lid. Swig says it keeps drinks cold for 12 hours and hot for 3, and it fits most car cup holders. Hand washing is what Swig recommends.

What owners report
Reviews on Swig's site cover every pattern of this mug, not just the mahjong one, so read them as reviews of the mug. Among the most critical, the lid leaking when you drink is the complaint that comes back most.
Flaws but not dealbreakers
  • A leaking lid is the most common complaint.
  • Tuck in a gift receipt: Swig's warranty needs a proof of purchase.

Who this is for

Anyone shopping for a player of American mahjong, the version played with the National Mah Jongg League's yearly card. If she plays Chinese or Japanese mahjong, skip the set and the books here: they're written for the American game.

How to choose

Does she already have a set?

If not, the set is the gift. If she does, give her a mat or racks instead.

Is it a full American set?

An American set has jokers and at least 152 tiles. A Chinese set has 144 tiles and no jokers.

Check what's in the box

Racks and pushers aren't always included in cheaper sets, and photos can show accessories that are sold separately. Read the list.

Add the card

For a beginner, the official card is the one thing she can't play without. The League sells it on its own website for $14, or $15 in the large size (how to read it).

What I'd skip

Unbranded sets under $80

Plenty of 166-tile sets sell for about $65 to $80 under names you won't find again. Some are fine, but a set is a gift for years, and I'd rather point you to a maker you can find and contact if something is missing.

Clear acrylic racks

They look modern and they're lighter than wood. If the racks are the gift, I'd pick wood.

Tile earrings and novelty jewelry

On Amazon they mostly come in packs of six to twenty cheap pairs. For jewelry, one good piece from a jeweler is the better gift.

How I picked

I compared 24 gifts and read what owners wrote on Yellow Mountain Imports' and Swig's own sites and on Goodreads for the books. Every product here is made by a company you can find and contact.

Common questions

What does every mahjong player need?
A set of tiles with four racks, this year's card from the National Mah Jongg League, and a mat to quiet the table. Everything else is a nice extra.
What is a good gift for someone who plays mahjong?
A mat or wooden racks for her table. A whole set is a good gift only if she doesn’t have one yet.
Is a full mahjong set a safe surprise gift?
For a beginner with no set, yes. For a regular player, usually not: she already has one, and players have strong opinions about tile size and colors.
What should I bring to a mahjong night?
A small hostess gift works well: cocktail napkins, a snack to share, or a score pad for the table.
How much does a mahjong set cost?
A full American set from a known maker like Yellow Mountain runs about $170. Designer sets from small mahjong shops cost about $300 to $500, and unbranded sets start around $65.
The verdict

The gift I'd give

For a player who already has her set, the Yellow Mountain mat is the safe, useful choice at about $31. If she's still learning and has nothing, go bigger and give her the Huntington set, with this year's card from the League tucked inside.
