Mahj Notes

About Mahj Notes

Mahj Notes teaches American mahjong the way the National Mah Jongg League plays it. A rule book tells you what's allowed. Here you see it, with tiles drawn for the site.

Who writes it

I'm Lena Marsh, and I write Mahj Notes. It's not the name on my driver's license, but it's the one on everything here.

Where to start

If you're new, the lessons are meant to be read in order: the tiles in a set, reading the card, the Charleston, jokers, and then a whole hand from the deal to mahj. Begin with the tiles.

The card

The card belongs to the League and changes every year, so buy yours from them. I explain how to read it and how to choose a hand. The example hands on this site are drawn for teaching, never copied from the card.

Printables

Some lessons come with a free one-page sheet you can print and keep beside you while you play. The first one is the Charleston cheat sheet.

Gear, and how I'm paid

When a page recommends a set, a rack or a mat, it names the one I'd buy and says who it isn't right for. If you buy through an Amazon link here, I earn a commission, and that's what pays for the site. As an Amazon Associate, Mahj Notes earns from qualifying purchases. Write to me

If a rule here is unclear or looks wrong to you, that's the email I most want to get. Broken links are worth a note too. Here's how to reach me.
